more - The Swedish Stena Metall group has strengthened its operations in the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) sector through the take-over of the Italian MP Ambiente Group which was completed last week. Announcing the transaction on Tuesday, the group described MP Ambiente as of one of the main electronics recyclers in Italy, having three operating sites in the north of the country, Elettro Recycling in Milan, and R.P.S. Ambiente and Videorecycling, in the Verona region. “The acquisition of MP Ambiente is a significant step on the implementation of our growth strategy in the Southern European market” says Phar Oscar, the managing director of Stena Metall’s WEEE operations. This is the group’s second take-over in the Italian e-scrap sector following the acquisition of Siat in Brescia in early 2009, and establishes the group among the country’s market leaders, according to Stena Metall.

According to the organiser, more than 2,620 companies from 44 countries have already registered for the trade fair for water, sewage, refuse and raw materials management, meaning that the 2010 event has already attracted more exhibitors than the previous edition, where 2,605 exhibitors from 41 countries presented their goods and services. The response from foreign participants had been particularly positive, with the share of exhibitors from abroad set to increase from 33 per cent at the previous fair to 37 per cent this year. With the rising number of exhibitors, Messe München has decided to expand the display space into another hall. The 2010 Ifat Entsorga is scheduled to run from 13 to 17 September in Munich.

more - The French waste to energy specialist Novergie has been awarded the contract to operate the household waste incineration plant in Ivry in the south of Paris by the municipal waste treatment organisation for the Greater Paris region (Syctom), Novergie's ultimate parent company Suez Environnement announced on Wednesday. The contract, which will take effect on 1 February 2011, represents around €210m in turnover over six years, including a three-year extention option. The incinerator can reportedly treat up to 670,000 tonnes of waste a year and is currently operated by Tiru, a joint venture held by the electricity group EdF and the environmental services groups Suez Environnement and Veolia Environnement.

The remaining equity is to be held by partner Nizit, which was established to pursue infrastructure projects in the Naro-Fromisk district and used to be entirely municipally-owned. As part of the joint venture, the municipal services company is initially to take over waste management for the up to 400,000 residents of the district, according to Remondis. The German concern would invest in vehicles and containers and introduce source-separated waste collections for the first time. Further investments were planned in a waste sorting plant and a composting facility if this was economically viable, said the Remondis statement. From the new site south-west of the Russian capital, the waste management concern is also seeking opportunities to take over waste management operations in other districts around Moscow.

In a statement issued after the ruling on Friday, the Court stated that both Trafigura and one of its employees had been cleared of charges that they falsified documents related to the wastes, which were later dumped at sites around Abidjan, Ivory Coast by a Trafigura contractor and linked to at least 15 deaths and around 100,000 cases of illness. An employee of Trafigura and the captain of the vessel Probo Koala received suspended jail sentences. The Dutch prosecutor had requested jail terms for the employees standing trial and a fine of €2m for Trafigura.

In its interim guidance statement issued prior to the group's annual general meeting, Shanks noted that the anticipated drop in revenues from its Belgian landfill activities and unfavourable currency effects had been offset by improvements in margins from private finance initiative (PFI) contracts and returns from its strategic investment programme. Shanks was beginning to see the results of its investments, with a number of plants coming online in the reporting period, among them a composting facility with a capactiy of 100,000 tonne per year in Ottawa, Canada, which belongs to Shanks' Orgaworld subsidiary.

The 2009 figures released by the group on Monday put the collection volume at 1.4m tonnes, and with that around 8 per cent more than in 2008. The collection rate rose from 6 to 48.4 per cent. The fibre industry processed the largest share of used bottles, accounting for 40 per cent of the market, down from 45 per cent the year before. The strapping market was the hardest hit by the recession, but still consumed 7 per cent of collected PET bottles. Petcore estimated that Europe has a total processing capacity of 1.6m tonnes for PET bottles.

The new policy would introduce additional levies for landfill and incineration was well as service standards for the waste management sector. Additional draft regulations published earlier in the week would require separate food collections for households beginning next year for the largest cities as of July 2011, expanding to include all urban areas by the start of 2012.

The plants had been ordered during the last quarter from Hitachi Zosen Corporation Ltd., AE&E's licensing partner in Japan. One of the plants is to be built in Laogang near Shanghai, and will be among the world's largest energy from waste plants with four incineration trains and a combined capacity of 1m tonnes per year when it is completed, said A-Tec. Hitachi Zosen is to provide the engineering design and the combustion system. AE&E's licensee itself also landed a contract during the past quarter for a wte plant in Nishiharima, Hyogo prefecture. Hitachi Zosen Corp. Ltd. has a licence agreement with Von Roll Umwelttechnik AG going back to 1961. Von Roll Inova, the successor company was rebranded as AE&E Inova in June.

In a Monday statement, One51 said that it had purchased chemical recycling company Alchema Ltd. and the industrial waste management firm Future Industrial Services at a total cost of over £15m. Alchema, which processes etchant solutions for the manufacture of printed circuit boards, was to be integrated into One51's existing British hazardous waste operations, said the concern's CEO, Philip Lynch. The concern's involvement on the British hazardous waste market includes a fly-ash treatment plant in Liverpool and a 17.7 per cent stake in hazardous waste management company Augean plc. One51's Environmental Services division is its largest operational unit, accounting for 81 per cent of the concern's consolidated revenues of £330.4m in 2009, according to the company's annual financial report.
