The Kyoto protocol contains two flexible mechanisms to foster reduction of greenhouse gases: Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI). Projects between two industrialized countries that agreed on a reduction target fall under JI. CDM projects are realized by partners from an industrialized country aiming at reducing its carbon dioxide emissions, and a developing country with no emissions reduction target.
Both CDM and JI can serve companies as an additional source of finance in international projects reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, they offer an opportunity to employ higher quality technology instead of simple solutions. Last but not least mechanisms’ international framework often helps reducing institutional risks in host countries.
The Federal Ministry for the Environment’s CDM/JI Initiative promotes German cooperation in CDM and JI projects worldwide. The initiative fosters the development of contacts between German companies and local institutions in the focus countries Brazil, China, India and in the MENA region. Networking support is given through establishment of local contact points and information events, workshops and discussion groups.
Find below a list of CDM/JI Initiative’s activities that are of special interest for companies and institutions from the recycling and waste management sector. You will also find websites containing further information and contact details of local contact persons.
