Information Trip from Brazil to IFAT 2026

Project

From 4 to 7 May 2026, German RETech Partnership e.V., with the support of the AHK Rio de Janeiro and on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), will organise an information trip to Germany for procurement professionals as well as multipliers from Brazil. The measure targets Brazilian decision-makers from municipalities, companies, and institutions active in the waste and recycling sector. The programme includes an information and presentation event, guided tours and networking opportunities at IFAT Munich 2026, as well as visits to companies and facilities. The tour offers comprehensive insights into technologies and trends in the German waste and recycling industry and facilitates contacts with potential business partners, particularly SMEs.

Target market Brazil waste management and circular economy

Brazil is one of the world’s largest economies and is experiencing steady growth, which is increasingly bringing the environmental and waste management sector into focus. With around 79 million tonnes of municipal solid waste generated annually and recycling rates—particularly for plastics—still well below the global average, there is a substantial need for modern technologies and efficient management solutions. While urban regions are increasingly seeking high-tech facilities for sorting, composting, and energy recovery, rural areas continue to face fundamental challenges in waste collection and disposal.

The political framework—particularly the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and the associated waste management plan—provides clear guidance for promoting the circular economy, expanding extended producer responsibility, and encouraging investments in infrastructure and innovative technologies. In addition, the Brazilian federal government plans to further involve private-sector actors through concessions and public–private partnerships. These developments, combined with growing demand for sustainable solutions, make the Brazilian market a dynamic target sector with attractive potential.

Objective of the trip

The information trip specifically strengthens networking between Brazil and Germany in the field of waste management and circular economy. Brazilian procurement professionals and multipliers gain practical insights into German technologies, products, and services and engage directly with potential business partners. Within the framework of IFAT Munich 2026, concrete business and project partnerships are initiated, knowledge transfer is promoted, and the internationalisation of German environmental technology providers is supported. At the same time, Germany is positioned as a strategic partner for sustainable environmental solutions.

Opportunities for German companies

The information trip offers German companies the opportunity to establish an early presence in a forward-looking market and to develop concrete business prospects in Brazil.

Particularly in demand are solutions in the following areas:

  • Collection & Sorting (vehicles, container systems, automated sorting technology)
  • Waste Treatment Facilities (MBT, composting, recycling plants)
  • Waste-to-Energy & Biogas
  • Mechanical and Chemical Recycling
  • Digitalisation, Monitoring & Resource Management

The combination of high investment needs, clear political objectives, and growing private-sector activities creates opportunities along the entire value chain—from individual technologies to integrated system solutions and long-term partnerships.
