Title:
Waste Management and Recycling in Tanzania
Region:
Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania
Term:
30.11.2026 – 04.12.2026
Partners:
AHK Services Eastern Africa Ltd. (Implementing Organization)
Bondacon International GmbH, German RETech Partnership, Verband Beratender Ingenieure (VBI)
Target Market and Sector
Tanzania and Zanzibar are facing growing challenges in the field of waste management. Of the estimated 14 to 20 million tonnes of waste generated annually, only 30–50% is properly collected and disposed of. Just 5–10% of collected waste is recycled.
At the same time, demand for modern waste management solutions continues to increase. Tourism in Zanzibar is developing rapidly in particular: in 2025, nearly 800,000 tourists visited the island. The tourism sector accounts for approximately 30% of Zanzibar’s GDP and is placing increasing pressure on existing waste collection, disposal and recycling systems.
Through its National Waste Management Strategy 2025–2030, Tanzania aims to expand modern waste management infrastructure, improve disposal standards and promote recycling initiatives. Additional momentum is being provided through international financing. In July 2025, KfW Development Bank signed a financing package worth EUR 25.68 million to support environmental infrastructure and climate resilience projects in Tanzania.
Objective of the Business Initiation Trip
The business initiation trip offers German companies a structured and supported entry into the markets of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. The objective is to facilitate contacts with potential customers, business partners and decision-makers from both the public and private sectors, while identifying concrete business opportunities in waste management and recycling.
Participating companies will receive up-to-date market information, take part in individually arranged B2B meetings and connect with key stakeholders, government authorities and international financing institutions.
Opportunities for German Companies
Tanzania’s waste management and recycling sector is undergoing significant development and offers promising opportunities for German technology providers and consulting companies.
Particular demand exists for solutions in the fields of:
- Waste separation and sorting technologies
- Recycling and waste processing equipment
- Composting and organic waste treatment
- Biogas and circular economy solutions
- Waste management consulting and capacity building
In addition, the limited availability of local expertise creates opportunities for long-term operation, maintenance and service contracts. Hotels and resorts in Zanzibar are increasingly seeking solutions for waste separation, PET recycling, composting and biogas production in order to meet sustainability requirements and growing environmental standards.
